les amateurs de Hunger Games vont être déçu. On dirait un mauvais copier/coller. C'est très descriptif pour masquer l'absence de fond, ça frise souvent le ridicule. Bref, on s'ennuie et on termine parce que le livre est court.
OK, I put off buying this book because some of the reviews were not exactly stellar. I'm glad I finally took the risk and purchased this series. It is simply wonderful. The catch here, however, is that you have to read it to the end - all the way to the last page of the third book. And I do mean the very last page, which holds the final, amazing, unexpected twist in this story.First, some reviewers seemed put off by the depictions of the vampires themselves. I LIKED the fact that they weren't some romantic, seductive, mysterious creature of the night. At its core, this book was about evolution, extinction of species, and disease/infection - things that just aren't pretty. And these vampires aren't pretty either. They are flesh and blood creatures with strengths and weakness. Some of their characteristics were grotesque. The author is, of course, making a point for the reader - the humans in the book are as grotesque to the vampires as they are to us. This makes them all the more fascinating to read about.Second, the plot twists and turns. Just when I thought certain story lines were predictable, the author surprised me with an unexpected twist. This happened even during the last few pages of the final (3rd) book. On the last 5 pages I thought one thing was happening, but then three pages later, another twist occurs and something completely different than what I expected happens. The final two pages are a complete shocker (wonderful!). When is the last time you have been truly surprised by a book?As for the series itself, the second book is the weakest of the three, but still important to the plot. It is frustrating when the characters can't figure out the obvious, such as what is really going on at the Mission. Still, the third book more than makes up for some of the drag in the second book. This series is a blast. Don't miss it.
The take-home: While the book may not pull you in from the start, it's a good book on the whole and starts a great series that's well worth reading. Even for people who aren't fans of supernatural books, it's still worth considering, and I think it's the kind of book/series that's perfect to bring along while travelling.More detailed review: The beginning of the book wasn't that great, but it also wasn't that bad -- just a little slow. The book eventually gets much more interesting, and it's a great series to stick with. Andrew Fukuda builds a very interesting world during this book, and as other reviewers have pointed out, you're not reading about typical vampires. On that note, I think Fukuda pokes a little too much fun at "typical" vampire books, and at points, instead of just trying to create a compelling world, it seems like he tries to set things up purely to contrast / contradict what he thinks would be in a ``normal'' vampire book. These differences often add a humorous note, but at the beginning it seemed like a lot of effort was devoted to making the book seem different just for the sake of making it seem different. All of that said, by the end of the book, once the focus becomes on plot rather than world-building, Fukuda leaves the reader with a fascinating setting, and one that even people who don't generally enjoy reading about the supernatural can appreciate because it's just so interesting. The plot itself becomes very suspenseful by the end of the book. I think I read the first half of the book over about five days, and the second half, over one (shortly followed by the rest of the series). Conversely, the characters are not super-interesting, and I didn't find myself becoming attached to any of them. Also, when books are set up with clear "good vs evil" boundaries, I tend to really appreciate being able to understand, at least to some extent, the psyche/motivations of the "bad guys," even if I abhor their actions. That is, unfortunately, not the case in this book; even though the main character is almost always surrounded by Fukuda's version of vampires, you don't ever really understand them. All in all, I definitely think there were a few flaws with this book. However, it -- and the series -- become very gripping, and the world is definitely pretty unique to the YA genre. In my mind, this book is perfect to bring while travelling; it's a good book to read on a plane or on a beach when you might not be looking for a super-intelectually stimulating book. I think it's also an appropriate read for fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, and the Alex Rider / Cherub / Jason Steed genre.
